Kickstarting our collaboration with Redefining Normal
ProneToWeakness is proud to have partnered with the Columbus nonprofit Redefining Normal to host a creative workshop this past Sunday night. An exciting start to the IDENTITY launch campaign. We were able to bring in residents from local group homes who suffer from diagnosed mental illness and guide them through a relaxing night of creativity.
Participants were given an instruction packet with three prompts themed around "identity." Each prompt had visual examples to serve as inspiration. The prompts were as follows:
Create a self-portrait representing you on your mental health journey. What obstacles have you had to overcome to be where you are today? How do you view yourself, having had to face them? Create a self-portrait that represents how you see yourself. It can be literal, abstract, vibrant or simple, just make sure it’s you.
Create a word collage that represents what you wish others knew about you. Strangers can often stereotype someone without knowing the truth behind their story. What do you wish someone knew about you that people often overlook or ignore? Add written or cut-out words, images, colors and drawings to help support your idea.
Create a picture of what makes you feel like yourself. Everyone has something that helps them feel comfortable in their own skin. This could be a hobby, a friend group, a religious belief, or something else. What about it helps you feel like yourself? Use colors, drawings and words to visualize it and the emotion it brings you.
The night started off with a brief explanation of the goal: create artwork inspired by identity—whatever that would mean to the person creating. Individuals within mental health treatment facilities and residences are often hidden from or ignored by the public, and we saw an opportunity to connect with them through expression.
We provided refreshments, one-on-one feedback for their ideas, and a peaceful space for everyone to express themselves. An incredible success for the start of the season.
ProneToWeakness has more planned for the IDENTITY campaign this Spring. Stay in the loop for more information. In the meantime, check out our campaign shoot.
